The Broken Connection: Self-Managed Communication for Difficult Situations

Communication that positively connects people and gets things done is essential to the success of individuals and organizations. Seems like a simple truth, but it isn't. Life is complicated and connective communication just doesn't happen all the time. When it breaks down we often find ourselves in difficult situations where we don't know what to do or where we automatically act in ways that make the situation worse, not better.

When communication threatens to break down, we need to be self-managed communicators who can rise above our automatic responses to difficult situations and make conscious choices about how to behave appropriately. We need to be aware of: 1) our own communication style, (2) how face-to-face talk really works, and (3) our own and others¹ emotions. Then we need to use this awareness to manage our communication using six essential skills that will permit us to re-connect positively to others and still get our work done.

Through lecturettes, group discussion, video illustration and interactive communication exercises, participants will learn the fundamentals of self-managed communication using scenarios and case studies from their workplace.
